VI Installation Methods
July 30, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT$35
Vapor intrusion is the migration of vapor-forming chemicals from any subsurface source into a office, home, or industrial building. It all started in the 1980s with concerns over radon intrusion. During the 90s, environmental professionals began to understand that hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents in soil, groundwater, and sewers and drainlines could also pose threats to indoor air quality via the vapor intrusion pathway. This EnviroClass will help you understand several of the installation methods that are common in the industry but also what is best practice.
Thomas will begin this class by laying out the basics of vapor intrusion while also covering site characterization & contamination delineation, designing for variables, designing for buildings, vapor barriers and remote monitoring. Jim will bookend this class by speaking on how to solve a complex vapor intrusion by using passive vapor samples.
Thomas Hatton is the CEO of Clean Vapor. He has thirty-three years of experience in design and installation management of Vapor Intrusion and Radon mitigation systems totaling approximately 11,000 combined commercial and residential properties. In 1985, he pioneered one of the first models to effectively predict the attenuation of soil vapors into homes. He has contributed to multiple codes and standards including the National ANSI /AARST Radon Mitigation Standards for Multi-Family Residential Buildings, the National Mitigation Standards for Large Buildings and Schools, the Vapor Intrusion Mitigation Standards for Residential Buildings and the recently released Soil Gas Control Systems in New Construction of Buildings. He has authored several technical papers on energy efficient soil gas venting systems for new construction and existing buildings including both of the NAVFAC Existing Building and New Construction Vapor Intrusion documents. Tom is the patent holder of the energy saving, remote management technology that stabilizes pressures between the underlying soil and buildings.
Jim Fineis is the owner and founder of Total Vapor Solutions, a full service vapor intrusion service company providing services in all 50 states and internationally. Prior to opening Total Vapor Solutions, he was the owner of Atlas Geo-Sampling Company. Between work contracted by Atlas Geo-Sampling and Total Vapor Solutions, Jim has conducted vapor intrusion projects throughout the United States and internationally. He has conducted over 500 vapor intrusion investigations. Recent projects include the collection of sub-slab, indoor air, crawl space air and ambient air samples in approximately 110 homes around a former military base.
